MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- The

Cost Index (ECI) reports detected the mood
of the market (see below).
- U.S.

- U.S.
Department of Labor reported that, the ECI
for Q1 rose a whopping 1.4%, well above
the 0.9% economists were anticipating, and
the highest growth since 1989! Employee
benefits costs soared 2.7% in the same period.
The Conference Board also reported this
week that, US Consumer Confidence dropped
slightly in April by 2.5%, despite the recent
stock market turmoil. What does this mean?
It means the Federal Reserve FOMC will raise
rates in May, and at least one more time
after that. To read more about the Federal
Reserve's possible actions, click to visit

Monetary Policy Monitor

MARKET
SUMMARY FOR MONDAY APRIL 24TH. 2000
DOW
INDUSTRIAL: 10906.10 = +62.05
NASDAQ: 3482.48 = -160.42
S & P 500: 1429.86 = -4.54
MOST
ACTIVE STOCKS & SECTORS
The Dow rallied as funds moved to blue chip stocks
after a rumor surfaced that, the Justice Department
will seek the breakup of Microsoft. Technology
heavy NASDAQ sustained heavy losses due mostly
to this rumor; it was a bad day to be a tech stock
irrespective of earnings (see below). Gainers
included: Ace Ltd., Advent Software,
AHP, AMD, American Express, Avanex Corp, BrightStar
Info., Caminus Corp, Central Park, Cherry Corp,
Childrens Place, Citigroup, Comsat, Garden.Com,
GE, IBM, Intel, Lockheed Martin, McDonalds, Merck,
Netzero, Oracle, Parametric, PMC-Sierra, Pfizer,
Philip Morris, Raytheon, Scientific Games, Silicon
Graphics, Ultratech Stepper, Vari-L, and Wal-mart.
MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- Microsoft's
demises set the tone for technology stocks
today. Although the software behemoth beat
earnings estimates, it reported that the
late shipment of its Windows 2000 operating
system hurt earnings, and the PC market
is looking flat. Goldman Sachs, S.G Cohen,
and Thomas Weisel all downgraded Microsoft.
As id that wasn't enough problems, rumor
is circulating that, the Justice Department
is seeking a breakup of the company, and
this set a selling tone for technology stocks
today. Microsoft has lost over 40% of its
value in the past 6 months (more than 10%
of that was today alone!).
- American
Express reported fiscal Q1 earnings that
beat estimates by 2 cent a share.
- Advent
reported fiscal Q1 earnings of 12 cents
a share, well above estimate.
- Priceline.Com
reported fiscal Q1 losses that were less
than estimates by 2 cents a share; Priceline
closed lower.
- Garden.Com
reported fiscal Q3 of 65 cents a share,
well lower than expected.
- Exodus
Communications reported fiscal Q1 earnings
that beat estimates by 3 cents a share;
Exodus closed lower.
- UltraTech
Stepper reported fiscal Q1 earnings that
met estimates.
- Vari-L
Semiconductor reported fiscal Q1 earnings
that met estimates.
- Cherry
Corp's Chairman and President, Peter Cherry,
and his associates are offering $18.75 per
share for the remaining 46% of the company's
stocks so as to take it private.
- Commerce
One, a Business to Business (B2B) leviathan,
was upgraded by CIBC WorldMarkets, and Pacific
Growth Equities; Commerce One closed lower.
- Merck
reported fiscal Q1 earnings that beat estimates
by One cent a share.
- ITT
was upgraded by CS First Boston.
- Qualcomm
is investing $144 million in Netzero, the
Free Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Lockheed
Martin's MLRS Rockets performed well in
a test fire.
- Comsat's
fiscal Q1 earnings of 39 cents a share beat
estimates. Comsat also reported earnings
growth of 77% in the same period.

INDUSTRIAL: 10844.05 = +169.09
NASDAQ: 3643.88 = -62.53
S & P 500: 1434.54 = +7.07
MOST
ACTIVE STOCKS & SECTORS
The Dow rallied as blue chip
stocks continue to post strong earnings, while
the NASDAQ lost due to a mild funds rotation.
Gainers included: 360 Networks,

Microsoft, Pfizer, PG&E, Philip Morris,

MAIN

- UPS
reported fiscal Q2 earnings that beat estimates
by 4 cents a share; UPS also announced a
logistics deal with Compaq computers.
- Microsoft's
fiscal Q3 profits rose 23% to $2.39 billion,
or 43 cents per share, 2 cents better than
estimates. The growth in Microsoft Office
suite outstripped other units. The impact
of Windows 2000 are too early to say, so
reported the company. Windows 2000 has sold
1.5 million copies already; Investors don't
seem too excited because Microsoft is losing
in after hours trading.
- US
Initial Jobless claims fell 257,000 for
week ending April 8th., the first time this
figure has fallen below 260,000 since December
1973. Though a lot of people have been hired
for the Census, this drop actually reflect
a tight labor market. What does it mean?
Inflationary pressure is still alive and
kicking-what for interest rate hikes.
