up as investor confidence in the Federal
Reserve's ability to fight inflation increases.

visit our Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Monitoring Page.

in raising production quarters.
- Sources
close to the deal said Lycos and and Spain's

at about $10 billion; Lycos keeps gaining
in after hours trading. Our question is,
shouldn't it be an outright acquisition
of Terra Networks by Lycos this late in

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- U.S.
Department of Labor reported that, US Producer
Price Index (PPI), a broad measure of inflationary
pressure in the wholesale sector, unexpectedly
dropped 0.3% in April, 0.1% above economists'
forecast, and the largest drop since February
1999. The Core PPI, which excludes volatile
energy and food sectors, rose in line with
expectations by 0.1%. Wall Street now expects
an even less severe rate increase from the
Feds on Tuesday (May 16th.) For more insight
on the Federal Reserve, visit our Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Monitoring Page.
- June
Oil futures rose 51 cents to close at $29.63/barrel
on concern that, there will be shortages
in the second half of the year.
- Coffee
prices collapsed today. Coffee July futures
closed at 94.50 cents a pound, the lowest
price in Seven Months.
- The
Euro closed the week higher at 91.94 cents
to the Euro.
- It
was a good day to be a Cable or Radio media
company today. Record advertisement sales
for the Fall Season had all related stocks
jumping, thanks to an article in the Wall
Street Journal too.
- Internet
Capital Group (ICG) reported fiscal Q1 net
income of $1.30 a share, well above Q1 1999
per share profits of 14 cents a share. The
high income was due mostly to its sale of
stakes in Ariba, etc. Robertson Stephen
and USB Piper Jaffray downgraded ICG because
they feel this income growth is not sustainable.

- Sequoia
Software, an extended markup language (XML)
developer for faster web transactions, debuted
its IPO today and closed with a 26% gain
from the offering price.
- IXYS
Corp, a high performance semiconductor devices
maker, reported that, fiscal Q4 2000 net
income at 19 cents a share, as compared
to 64 cents a share losses in fiscal Q4
1999. For fiscal year ended in March, revenue
was up 15.2% from previous year.
- Marlin
Partners II, which owns a 9.1% stake in
Allstrista, a metal and plastics products
maker, wants Allstrista to go private at
$30 a share. No suitor has been named yet.
Marlin Partners are frustrated with the
company's failure to boost investor value;
Allstrista closed at $24.75 a share.
- Ingersoll-Rand
is paying $1.56 billion for Husmann International,
a food and refrigeration products manufacturer.
- Carl
Icahn, the well known financier, raised
his bidding price for Nabisco Group by $6/share
to $22 a share; Nabisco Group closed at
$19.68 a share.
- Xerox's
decision to let go its outside CEO, and
hire its former CEO is getting mixed reviews
on wall street. The scales seem to favor
the decision for now. What do you think?

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- Cisco
Systems lost 7% of its value after an article
in Barron's stated that Cisco is heavily
over valued. This article set the tone for
massive losses in the technology and Internet
sectors (and Technology stocks heavy NASDAQ).
- NTT,
Japan's behemoth Telephone, wireless, and
Internet Corporation, is to pay $5.5 billion
for the remaining 90% stake in Verio, a
US Internet Service Provider (ISP). This
will mark an aggressive entry for NTT into
the competitive US market, as opposed its
near monopoly in Japan. NTT is also rumored
to have interest in Royal KPN and Orange
PLC. of the Nertherlands and U.K. respectively;
both are major mobile wireless players in
Europe.
- Qlogic
is acquiring Ancor Communications in a deal
valued at $1.7 billion.
- Genentech
is collaborating with Immunogen to develop
treatments for certain cancers.
- Tyco
International is paying $750 million for
the electronic equipment unit of Thomas
and Betts.

Paso Energy was upgraded by Donaldson, Lufkin
& Jenrette.
- Keitley
Instruments announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
- MP3.Com
announced that it has signed an agreement
with Broadcast Music, a purveyor of Online
Music.
- The
Bond market continues to be hit hard as
analysts expect up to 50 bases (0.50%) points
interest rates hike by the Feds. For more
on possible Federal Reserve action, visit
our Federal Reserve
Monetary Policy page. If you have opinions
about our Federal Reserve analysis, post
them here
- CS

- Chase
H&Q upgraded Tiffany.
- Prudential
upgraded WMS Industries.
- Pfizer
was upgraded by Lehman Brothers.
- The
Euro, the common currency of Europe, continued
its free fall today, ending the day at 89
cents to a Euro. Word is, European Central
Banks have no intention of intervening soon.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Amazon announced a 2 year exclusive
bookselling deal with Oxygen Media Group.
Under the deal, Amazon will also advertise
on Oxygen's Cable Network.
- AFTER
CLOSE: US District Judge Whyte accepted
Microsoft's request for a summary judgment
on Sun Microsystem's lawsuit. The Judge
also rejected Sun's Java Copyright claims.
PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY
REASONS
BEHIND THE PICKS
- Two
points need to be made:
- First
of all, any newspaper that judges Cisco
systems based on its Price - Earnings (P-E)
ratio relative to its counterparts needs
to learn about the new economy a little
better. Cisco might have counterparts, but
has no competitor in its core businesses,
which are new and growing.
- Secondly,
Cisco Systems keeps anticipating the future
direction of the new economy and makes aggressive
investments in the sector, which it ends
up dominating. Normally, Cisco takes over
a company, but maintains the original team
to keep the creativity spirit intact. Cisco
rather ends up with a team dedicated to
keeping the company number one in their
business sector, which raises the company's
(and their) share prices. This
