MARKET
SUMMARY FOR FRIDAY MAY 26TH. 2000
DOW
INDUSTRIAL: 10299.24 = -24.68
NASDAQ: 3205.11 = -0.24
S & P 500: 1378.02 = -3.50
MOST

included: Atmos Energy, AT&T, Broadvision,

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- The

only a 0.5% drop. Personal Income rose 0.7%
in the same period, 0.1% higher than forecasted.
Personal spending rose 0.4% in April, 0.1%
above forecast. Although the figures don't
show the economy coming to a full stop,
they do show some slowing.
- The
markets recovered almost a 130 points deficit
in early trading today to close modestly.
For the week, the Dow closed down 328 points,
while the NASDAQ amassed a 185 points loss.
- US
gasoline futures closed up at $1.026 a gallon,
the highest price since the Gulf war. Why
the high prices? Besides shortages, the
new environment friendly Reformulated Gasoline
Phase 2 (RFG2) takes time and it is hard
to make. Crude oil on the other hand gave
back 51 cents to close the week at $30 a
barrel.
- Moody's

USA, to Junk Bonds status.
- Costco
Wholesale was upgraded by DB Alex Brown.

independent Oil and Gas concerns.
- Alcon
Laboratories, a unit of Nestle, is paying
$892.8 million for Summit Autonomous, an
eye surgery company. The deal is worth $19/share
of Summit; Summit closed at 18+.
- Office
Depot reported that, its fiscal Q2 earnings
will be about 4 to 6 cents a share LOWER
than the First Call estimate of 24 cents
a share. Office Depot took a heavy beating
today.
- Progenics
Pharmaceutical lost about 70% of its value
today after a respected Oncology group withdrew
from testing trials of its GMK vaccine for
melanoma. The Oncology group stated that,
some already approved melanoma treatment
therapies have performed better than GMK.
Lazard Frerers and CIBC WorldMarkets downgraded
Progenics. CIBC also lowered its price target
by more than half.
- The
Justice Department filed its final revised
papers today recommending a two way split
of Microsoft. While Microsoft closed a fraction
lower, it is gaining in after hours trading.
Should Microsoft be broken into more than
two units? Post your opinions with the title
MICROSOFT BREAKUP UNITS here.
- Is
the Justice Department's approval of the
AT&T/MediaOne merger setting the stage
for a future anti-trust trial? Post your
comments with the title MEDIAONE ACQUISITION
here.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Sources close to the deal say Lucent

in a deal valued at about $5.7 billion.

stake in TrafficMaster Europe GmbH, the
German subsidiary of the U.K.'s TrafficMaster
Plc. The new company will provide advanced

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY

its fiscal Q1 Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
growth of 5.4%. Economists expected a downward
reversal to 5.2%. This ignited fears that
the economy might not be slowing enough.
- US
Existing Homes sale for April dropped 6.2%,
signaling a cooling off in the housing sector.
- Bond
prices surged as funds moved in from the
stock market.
- AT&T's
acquisition of MediaOne has been approved
by the Justice Department. Concerns are
that, with AT&T now owning MediaOne
and a big chunk of other cable operations,
the Justice Department's approval is setting
the stage for a future anti-trust trial.
What do you think? Post your comments with
the title MEDIAONE ACQUISITION here.
- Oil
futures prices for July surged 58 cents
to a 10 week high of $30.51/barrel as gasoline
shortage fears grip the markets.
- Sonus
Networks and Stanford Microdevices' IPOs
debuted strong today.
- Microsoft
lost about 6% today on fears that the leviathan
might be broken up three ways. However,
a late news release from the Justice Department

- The
US House of Representatives have passed

Petroleum Institute (API) reported a sharp
drop in gasoline inventories.
