- CMGI
gained 16.39% after announcing its plans
to merge 17 businesses it owns majority
stakes in. CMGI's move is to cut cost and
reach profitability.
- The
Clinton Administration announced that it
will allow Japan's telecommunications behemoth
NTT Communications, to acquire US Internet
Service Provider (ISP) Verio. NTT is offering
$5.5 billion for Verio, but the deal was
held up due to national security reasons.
Verio gained a fraction.
- The
Energy Intelligence Agency (EIA) reported
an unexpected drop in US Crude oil stockpiles
to the lowest levels in 24 years. Oil futures
and energy related stocks rallied, while
oil dependent stocks like airlines closed
lower.
- Oracle
announced that it will start offering its
sales force automation software for FREE
at OracleSalesOnline.Com. Oracle intends
to challenge industry leader Siebel Systems,
and the upstart SalesForce.Com. SalesForce
was funded by a former Oracle executive,
and Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison holds a board
seat in the company. Oracle closed down
a fraction, while Siebel lost 2.87%. Give

- Intuit,
the developers of personal and small business
financial software Quicken and QuickBooks,
reported fiscal Q4 losses of 4 cents a share,
well lower than the First Call estimated
losses of 9 cents a share. Over the year
sales rose to $1.09 billion (16%). Internet
sales doubled to $294 million, and online
sales now represent 27% of total sales.
Intuit will also start bundling the software
of online stamp retailer Stamps.Com with
its financial software packages. Inuit gained
18.59%, while Stamps.Com gained 33.33%.
- IPOs
Today: o2Micro International, a maker of
integrated circuits, closed up 130.73% above
its offering price. Key3Media Group, a spinoff
of Ziff-Davis that stages tradeshows and
conferences for the technology industry,
debuted today on the NYSE at $6 a share.
Ziff-Davis gained a fraction.
- Cyberonics,
a medical devices maker, reported quarterly
losses yesterday that were a cent higher
than First Call estimates. Cyberonics however,
gained 30.30% today because over the year
sales rose to $14.1 million, and that made
many analysts to have positive comments.
- Provalis'
diagnostic division has received FDA approval
to market its Diabetes therapy monitoring
system Glycosal in the US. Provalis gained
100%.
- Quanta
Services, a telecommunications, cable, and
electrical contractor, gained 6 1/4 after
announcing a $400 million contract from
Everet Communications.
- Smithfield
Foods, the largest US hog and pork producer,
is buying a 6.3% stake in rival IBP for
about $106 million. Food processor Archer
Daniels Midland also owns a 12.2% stake
in IBP. Smithfield gained 1 7/8, IBP gained
1 point, while Archer Daniels Midland gained
a fraction.
- A
coalition headed by AOL, Exodus Communications,
and Inktomi are teaming up to challenge
Akamai Technologies in Internet content
delivery. The Consortium, called Content
Bridge, also include Adero, Digital Island,
Genuity, Netrail, Madge Networks' Madge
Web, and Xcelera's Mirror Image. Inktomi
gained 8.17%, Genuity gained 7.14%, while
AOL and Exodus gained fractions. Madge Networks,
Xcelera and Akamai closed lower, with Akamai
losing 3.25%.

The
Dow and NASDAQ closed higher after the Federal
Reserve FOMC decide to leave interest rates
unchanged. Retailing stocks got a boost on the
news as investors went after these battered
stocks, and almost totally ignored Internet
and technology stocks. Banking, and Biotechnology
stocks didn't do bad either. Gainers included:
AMD, Ameritrade Holdings, Amgen, AOL, Ariba,
AT&T Liberty, Biosource International, Bristol
Myers Squibb, Chase Manhattan, Ciena Corp, Clarus
Corp, Commerce One, Community Health Systems,
Compaq, Citigroup, Crossroads Systems, DSL.Net,
Ericsson, E*Trade Group, Evoke Communications,
Ford Motor Co., FreeMarkets, The Gap, General

- Defense
Contractors again gained on Governor George
Bush's indication in a speech Monday that
if elected, he will increase defense spending.
- Intel
demonstrated its 2GHz Pentium 4 chip today
at the Intel Developers' Forum. Intel gained
a fraction.
- DSL.Net,
a high speed Internet ISP, has been selected
to be the bandwidth provider for IBM's small
business customers for its WebConnections
hosting services. DSL.Net closed up 99%
and still gaining in after hours trading.
- Bear
Stearns initiated coverage with good recommendations
and raised price targets on Business-to-Business
(B2B) companies like Ariba, Opus360, and
Commerce One.
- Compaq
gained after wining a $200 million contract
to supply the US Department of Energy with
an advanced supercomputer. The computer,
code named "Q", will be used to
simulate nuclear weapons testing.
- Dutch
aviation services company ICTS gained 30%
after announcing that it is selling its
ICTS Europe B.V. subsidiary to Frankfort
(Germany) Airport's Civil Aviation Securities
Services GmbH unit for $100 million.
- Media
Metrix, the Internet use measuring company
reported today the July unique visitors
to web properties data. AOL properties led
with 62.5 million visitors, a 5.9% increase
from June. Microsoft properties had 50.3
million, a 0.6% increase from June. Yahoo!
properties had 49 million, a 2.0% increase
from June.
- Merrill
Lynch analyst Henry Blodget expressed skepticism
about Q3 advertising revenue growth for
Yahoo! and AOL. Mr. Blodget thinks Yahoo!
and AOL will post good but not too great
advertisement or commerce revenues. Hmmmmm?
Mr. Blodget, meet Media Metrix. Media Metrix,
Mr. Blodget. Haven't we heard this same
thing before for Q1, Q2, and now for Q3

Anyway, Yahoo! closed down 2.25%, AOL gained
1 1/4, while Microsoft gained a fraction.
- Microsoft
filed its brief today to the US Supreme
Court. As expected, Microsoft is requesting
that the High Court allow an Appeals court
to hear the case. A Supreme Court ruling
on whether to hear the case could come as
early as Monday next week.
- Paytrust.Com
and PayMyBills.Com, two leading Electronic
Payment Systems (EPS), are merging, so it
was announced today. The EPS market has
been heating up lately and has attracted
new players like AOL's Netscape.
- Crossroads
Systems, a networking and data storage related
company, demonstrated the first Server-Free
Backup capabilities. Crossroads soared 41.18%
on the news in regular trading, but has
given back about 5% of those gains in after
hours trading.
- AFTER
CLOSE: NBC has purchased warrants for 10
million shares, or $141 million from Quokka
Sports, the leading online sports content
company. This is all part of the sweeping
NBC/Quokka Olympic deal. NBC has up to 3
years to exercise the warrants. Quokka,
which closed up a fraction in regular trading,
is gaining aggressively in after hours trading.

FOMC policy announcement. Retailing stocks closed
lower again due to uncertainty about second
half 2000 earnings. Profit taking pushed down

Contractors gained after Governor Bush indicated
that if elected, he will increase defense
spending.
- ClearNet
gained 41.94% on news that Canadian telephone
company Telus is paying US$4.48 billion
in cash for the wireless services provider.
- MicroStrategy
and IBM are in an alliance to co-promote
and co-market their products. Under the
deal, IBM will start selling MicroStrategy's
popular Customare Relationship Management
(CRM) software. MicroStrategy will in turn
start incorporating IBM's software products
in software that will allow businesses combine
Internet technologies with their traditional
databases, so as to help businesses create
and manage web information efficiently.
MicroStrategy gained 40.77%, while IBM gained
1 point.
- Ericsson
is teaming up with Worldcom's Internet Backbone
unit UUNet to develop an advanced General
Packet Radio Services (GPRS) Internet services
for mobile phones & wireless devices.
GPRS allows devices to stay connected online.
The deal also calls for the 2 companies
to co-develop Wireless Application Protocol
(WAP) software. Worldcom gained a fraction,
while Ericsson lost a fraction.
- Cabletron
System's Entrasys Networks unit is paying
$170 million for Indus River Networks, a
provider of secure networks connections
for corporations. Cabletron gained 2.82%.
- McAfee.Com,
a unit of Network Associates, announced
that it is developing an anti-virus software
for web enabled handheld devices and cell
phones. The software will be PC based because
of the limited memory in devices and phones.
Symantec, another anti-virus software developer,
is reportedly testing its Beta version.
McAfee.Com lost 2.84%, while Network Associates
closed up 3.48%.
- Pegasystem
gained 30.30% on news that AOL will continue
using its Customer Relationship Management
(CRM) software. AOL also gained (3.53%).
- Verizon
Communications gained a fraction after announcing
that it has reached an agreement with about
75% of its striking unions.
- Transocean
Sedco Forex, the world's largest offshore
oil-drilling company, is paying $5.3 billion
in stocks for rival R&B Falcon. This
puts Transocean lost 4 3/16, while Falcon
closed up 3.97%.
- Viasystems
Group, a Contract Electronics Manufacturer
(CEM), announced that it is buying Lucent's
Rouen Global Provisioning Centre, a logistics
and production center for Radio Telecommunications
and Transmissions. Viasystems gained 7.81%,

- DEVELOPMENTS
TO WATCH: CNet reported that a high ranking
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) official
made known that it will be hard for the
FTC to hold back AOL/Time Warner merger
due to anti-trust charges concerning Instant
Messaging (IM). AOL does not charge for
its 2 IM services - AIM and ICQ. AOL now
control the IM market by 70% and it keeps
increasing. Other IM service companies want
AOL to stop blocking their services from
interacting with AOL's, and the want an
IM Protocol standard.
