- National
Grid is paying $3 billion for New York State
power utility Niagara Mohawk Holdings. Niagara
closed up 13.51%.
- Takeover
rumors in brokerage industry, especially
about JP Morgan, pushed some brokerage stocks
up.
- Word
is that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
wants the AOL/Time Warner merger proposal
to make numerous changes before it will
consider approving it. The FTC is worried
that AOL will unfairly dominate the market
in areas where Time Warner owns cable systems.
AOL and Time Warner were supposed to meet
with European Union officials this week
so as to persuade them to approve the merger.
AOL lost a fraction, while Time Warner lost
3.07%.
- Worldcom
is paying $6 billion ($3 billion in stocks
and $3 billion in debt) to acquire Intermedia
Communications, parent of leading web hosting
company Digex. Global Crossing was previously
eyeing the company. Intermedia gained 37.64%,
while Worldcom lost 3 3/16.
- The
US Dollar gained against both the Japanese
Yen and the Euro. October crude Oil Futures
rose 45 cents to close at $33.83/barrel
as supply fears continue to mount. Soybean
futures were also up due to drought concerns.
- CNET
Networks reported that its $1.6 billion
purchase of ZDNet will generate about $580
million in revenues in year 2001. CNET lost
6.84%, while ZDNet lost 6.92%.
- IBM

that will allow IBM to use AT&T's hosting
facilities to bring other businesses online.

- GoTo.Com
gained 19.55% after announcing a $50 million
deal with AOL that will allow paying clients
to rank higher on AOL Properties' searches.
GoTo.Com expects a similar deal very soon
with Yahoo!, which gained 2.80%. Do you
think the selling of rankings on the net's
2 most popular sites will dilute these directories
from quality destination sites to just another
deep-pocket content hype? Give us your viewpoints
here.
- USB
Piper Jaffray downgraded Intel to a "buy"
recommendation because of an "unexpected"
slowdown in chip demand.
- Qualcomm
gained a fraction on word that the Chinese
Government might allow China Unicom, a telecommunications
company, to build its CDMA technology as
early as 2001. Qualcomm licenses the CDMA
technology.
- Coca
Cola gained 3.80% after announcing that
it will meet analysts' fiscal Q3 expectations.
- Internet
retailing stocks like Amazon gained aggressively
after the Gartner Group, an Internet use
research company, reported that it expects

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY
REASONS
BEHIND THE PICKS
- Today's
drop was just a hiccup. An over-reaction
due to the Intel and AOL/Time Warner woes.
We are still holding to our picks!
- About
Internet advertising, read the next bullet
point, and should you want more, visit our
Quarterly forecasts,
or search our previous articles with the
keywords: Nielsen, Media Metrix, and Jupiter
Communications.
- We
don't expect Internet companies to suffer
from advertisement revenues for some basic
reasons: The Internet will play a very important
role in the Sydney Olympics. For example,
most people will turn to the Internet to
get scores and standings on sports their
local networks will not cover (mine is Soccer!).
This will be the Internet's really FIRST
Olympics, and we are actually forecasting
a tremendous rise in traffic. Secondly,
as we pointed out in our Quarterly
forecasts, brick and mortar stores are
now raising their online advertisement budgets,
and when is the best time to advertise than
say the Olympics? or after that, the never
ending holidays that stretch from November
to December. As such, we are still bullish
on our picks, especially Internet Portals,
BioPharmaceuticals and Biotechnology. Give
us your point of view on this at our NEW
and EXPANDED message boards here.

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- The
Economic Cyclical Research Institute (ECRI)
reported that its Future Inflation Gauge
(FIG) for August was 121.1, the lowest levels
in 5 months, and the fourth consecutive
decline.
- The
US Unemployment rate edged up from
4.0% to 4.1% in August. Hourly earnings
also eased to June levels. The earnings
ease came mostly from construction and manufacturing
sectors. Job claims rose 105,000 in the
period.
- The
National Association of Purchasing Managers
(NAPM) reported that its NAPM index dropped
to 49.5% in August, the first time the index
came below 50% since January 1999. The associate
Employment and Production indexes all came
in below 50%. The Price Index came at 56.2%,
the lowest in a whole year. New Order declined
slightly to close at 49.7%. Any close above
50% signify manufacturing growth.
- US
Construction spending dropped 1.6% in July,
the fourth straight month. Public Projects
and Retail Building Construction spending
led the decline. Visit our redesigned Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page
to read more on our take on the coming Federal
Reserve FOMC meeting. Also, visit our expanded
message boards to discuss this topic or
any other business topic by clicking here.
- Ford
Motor Co. reported that despite the tire
recall woes that surrounded its Ford Explorer
Series, sales slipped only 3.7% overall
in August. Ford Explorer sales dropped 0.8%
for the month, but due to the extra selling
day in August, Explorer sales actually rose
to 40,157 - a new record for August. Ford
gained a fraction. GM's overall sales dropped
5.4% for the month, with Oldsmobile sales
dropping 30.9%. GM closed up 3 1/8. DainlerChrysler
reported that over the year sales rose 2%,
led by record sales in SUVs, Minivans, and
the PT Cruiser. DaimlerChrysler gained a
fraction.
- Yahoo!
lost 6.22% after a Wall Street Journal article
raised issue about the DotCom advertising
budget cuts again.
- Nielsen/NetRatings
reported that more and more Americans are
now using the Internet to get financial
information. Yahoo! leads the pack with
3.1 million unique visitors in July, CBS
Marketwatch and card company NextCard came
in with 2.5 million each, while MSN's MoneyCentral
came in next with 2 million.
- AOL
and Time Warner will meet with European
regulators next Wednesday and Thursday to
persuade them to approve their merger. EMI
Group will also be joining them so as to
push for the approval of its joint venture
with Warner Music Group. AOL lost 2.01%,
while Time Warner lost 1.34%.
- A
Connecticut Jury awarded One million Dollars
to a small and privately held Bristol technologies
in its suit against Microsoft. Bristol claimed
in its suit that Microsoft used its monopoly
power to refuse renegotiation on a new contract
for Windows source code. The US District
Court Judge ruled that Microsoft violated
both Federal and State anti-competition
laws and used business practices that were
"..wanton, deceptive..". Microsoft
gained a fraction.
- Global
Crossing rose 16.8% after raising its revenue
expectations for the current year by 7%
to $5.2 billion, a whopping 38% above 1999.
- Bid.Com
International gained 27.4% after announcing
that its One million Dollars stake in Quack.Com
is now worth $23 million due to AOL's acquisition
of voice portal.
- The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) gave a warning on 1.4 million more
Firestone Tires. The warning said these
1.4 million tires pose even greater dangers
than those being recalled. Firestones is
a unit of Japan's Bridgestone Corporation.
- Lycos
gained 3 5/8 after its CEO Bob Davis distanced
itself from Yahoo!'s business model. Mr.
Davis said that its pending merger with
Terra Networks will insulate it from DotCom
advertising revenues because the diversified
group will rely on advertising, e-commerce,
access and wireless. Terra Networks gained
2 7/8.

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY
REASONS
BEHIND THE PICKS
- Once
again, we have an upbeat outlook for next
week. We are still holding to our picks!
About Internet advertising, read the next
bullet point, and should you want more,
visit our Quarterly
forecasts, or search our previous articles
with the keywords: Nielsen, Media Metrix,
and Jupiter Communications.
- We
don't expect Internet companies to suffer
from advertisement revenues for some basic
reasons: The Internet will play a very important
role in the Sydney Olympics. For example,
most people will turn to the Internet to
get scores and standings on sports their
local networks will not cover (mine is Soccer!).
This will be the Internet's really FIRST
Olympics, and we are actually forecasting
a tremendous rise in traffic. Secondly,
as we pointed out in our Quarterly
forecasts, brick and mortar stores are
now raising their online advertisement budgets,
and when is the best time to advertise than
say the Olympics? or after that, the never
ending holidays that stretch from November
to December. As such, we are still bullish
on our picks, especially Internet Portals,
BioPharmaceuticals and Biotechnology. Give
us your point of view on this at our NEW
and EXPANDED message boards here.
- STOCKS
TO WATCH NEXT MARKET DAY: See below
- Biotechnology/Biopharmaceuticals,
B2B, Technology (Software and Networking
stocks), Contract Equipment Manufacturers
(CEMs), and Online Brokerage stocks are
still our premiere picks.
- Expect
the major Internet Portal sites to perform
very well.
- Internet
holding and capacity (storage) companies
will do very well (check out our Quarterly
forecasts for other picks).

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- The
US Department of Commerce reported that
Internet Retail Sales for Q2 2000 rose 5.3%
to $5.518 billion, representing 0.68% of
total retail sales. The Q1 2000 Internet
Retail Sales data was revised downward to
$5.240 billion, representing 0.70% of total
retail sales.
- The
Conference Board reported that the US Help
Wanted Advertisement Index for July rose
moderately to 82 points, the same rate as
it was in May, but well lower than the 89
points reported in April. An increasing
help wanted index indicates an expansion,
but in this case, the growth is negligible.
- US
Factory Orders dropped 7.5% in July (largest
drop ever), due mostly to a sharp drop in
Aircraft orders. Electronics and Electrical
equipment orders dropped 17.2% for the period.
Industrial equipment however, rose, with
computer equipment leading the gains with
a 7.9% increase. Semiconductor supply was
also strong for the period.
- US
Chain Store Sales' year-to-year rose a mere
3.3% in August. Chain Store sales continue
to slide with Department and Apparel stores
leading the decline in August.
- US
Jobless Claims for week ending August 26
stood at 318,000, about 4,000 higher than
the preceding week.
- The
Chicago Purchasing Managers Association
reported that its Chicago PMI for August
dropped to 46.50 which is an indication
of manufacturing slowing in the Chicago
area. A PMI above 50 is an indication of
a expansion in the sector. Based on today's
data and what we are expecting tomorrow,
we have re-shaped our view on possible Federal
Reserve FOMC action on October 3. Visit
our redesigned Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page
to read more on the Federal Reserve FOMC.
Also, visit our expanded message boards
to discuss this topic or any other business
topic by clicking here.
- The
Wall Street Journal reported that European
Anti-Trust Officials are concerned about
the AOL/Time Warner merger. The Commission
feels AOL/Time Warner will dominate online
content delivery in the areas of music,
film, sports and entertainment programming.
AOL lost a fraction, Time Warner lost 1.43%.
- Excite@Home
is acquiring the most popular gaming site
Pogo.Com for an undisclosed amount. Pogo.Com
is one of the stickiest (people stay longest)
site on the web. Excite lost a fraction.
- Cisco
Systems, the networking equipment behemoth,
is paying $369 million in stocks for PixStream,
a privately held Canadian maker of hardware
and software for digital video delivery
over high speed networks. Cisco rose 2.91%.
- AMD
announced that Larry Hollatz, VP of Computation
products, and an influence in the spectacular
performance of the Athlon Processor, is
resigning to pursue other interests. The
sudden departure of Mr. Hollatz when AMD
is leading rival Intel in 1 Gigahertz processor
market is a puzzle. Intel closed up 1.87%,
while AMD gained 7.86%.
- Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) announced
that its global Wafer Foundry Capacity is
sold out to 2001, and expects demand to
be robust up to 2003. TSMC closed up 1.82%.
- Crude
Oil dropped 20 cents to close at $33.12/barrel
(October futures delivery).
- Ariba,
IBM, and Microsoft are planning a B2B Standard
that will let businesses register their
services and other businesses interested
in the services can access it (a directory-like
standard built around XML). Ariba gained
3.20%, IBM gained 1.39%, while Microsoft
lost a fraction.
- Electronics
for Imaging, a color imaging company, is
paying $146 million for Splash Technology,
a supplier of color servers. Electronics
for Imaging lost 3 1/16, while Splash Technology
gained 27.88%
- Nielsen/Net
Ratings reported that its July measure of
8 countries' internet use on at home basis
found Yahoo! leading with 66 million, AOL
with 62 million, and MSN with 50 million.
Yahoo! was number 1 in Japan, Singapore
and Ireland. MSN was number 1 in UK, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand. AOL led in the
US. The study also found e-commerce as booming
globally. AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! all
closed lower.
- After
the CS First Boston acquisition of Donaldson
Lufkin Jenrette (DLJ), rumors are now that
JP Morgan might be acquired by either Goldman
Sachs or Chase Manhattan, or possibly a
foreign company. JP Morgan rose 10.08%,
Goldman Sachs 3.54%, and Chase up 4.93%.
- Sanmina,
a Contract Electronics Manufacturer (CEM),
announced that it is acquiring the Messaging
System Integration & Fulfillment Operations
of Lucent Technologies. Sanmina gained 13.19%,
while Lucent lost 1 1/16. Read our take
on the future of CEMs at our Quarterly
forecasts page.
- Retailers
like the Gap, the Limited, JC Penney, Ross
Stores, Target, Intimate Brands and the
Finish Line were all downgraded today.
- AFTER
CLOSE: AOL announced that it is acquiring,
voice activated portal Quack.Com for an
undisclosed amount. This acquisition will
allow AOL access to non-PC devices.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Upscale retailer Nordstrom announced
the resignation of J.W. Nordstrom as Chairman,
John Whitacre as CEO, and Michael Stein
as CFO. 66-year old Bruce Nordstrom is the
new Chairman. 39-year old Blake Nordstrom
is the new President, and a new CFO is being
sought. Nordstrom lost 6.1% in regular trading.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Lucent, which lost 1 point in regular
trading, announced that it is spinning off
its Enterprise Network Group, which includes
its business telephone networks, Voice &
Data Switches business for the networks,
and its Voice Messaging Systems Unit. The
new company will be called Avaya, and the
spin-off is expected to be completed by
September 30th.

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY
REASONS
BEHIND THE PICKS
- The
economic data tomorrow and the rest of the
week will determine market forces. We expect
the economic data to show an increasing
slowness in the economy.
- We
don't expect Internet companies to suffer
from advertisement revenues for some basic
reasons: The Internet will play a very important
role in the Sydney Olympics. For example,
most people will turn to the Internet to
get scores and standings on sports their
local networks will not cover (mine is Soccer!).
This will be the Internet's really FIRST
Olympics, and we are actually forecasting
a tremendous rise in traffic. Secondly,
as we pointed out in our Quarterly
forecasts, brick and mortar stores are
now raising their online advertisement budgets,
and when is the best time to advertise than
say the Olympics? or after that, the never
ending holidays that stretch from November
to December. As such, we are still bullish
on our picks, especially Internet Portals,
BioPharmaceuticals and Biotechnology. Give
us your point of view on this at our NEW
and EXPANDED message boards here.
- STOCKS
TO WATCH NEXT MARKET DAY: See below
- Biotechnology/Biopharmaceuticals,
B2B, Technology (Software and Networking
stocks), Contract Equipment Manufacturers
(CEMs), and Online Brokerage stocks are
still our premiere picks.
- Expect
the major Internet Portal sites to perform
very well.
- Internet
holding and capacity (storage) companies
will do very well (check out our Quarterly
forecasts for other picks).

MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- The
Conference Board reported that US Consumer
Confidence in August stood at 141.1, below
the consensus estimate, and below the upward
revised June figures of 143. Consumer Confidence
for the Present Situation and Expectations
of the future were all down for the month.
- US
New Home Sales for July posted a sharp increase
to 944,000 units, well above the consensus
estimates, and the highest monthly growth
in over 7 years. The West recorded the sharpest
jump, followed by the South and Midwest
regions. The Northeast however, recorded
a drop. What does this mean? We shouldn't
read too much into this data for the following
reasons: Most housing data like existing
home sales contradict this data. Secondly,
new home sales data for August will be due
before the Federal Reserve FOMC meets again
on October 3rd., let alone other economic
data releases. Visit our redesigned Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page

- Dresner
Kleinwort Benson downgraded Ford Motor Company
to "add" from its "buy"
recommendation. The downgrade came due to
tire recall. Ford Motor lost a fraction.
- UUNet,
the Internet "Backbone" unit of
Worldcom, is entering the South American
Internet market, starting with Brazil. Worldcom
lost 1.51%.
- Word
is that Credit Suisse First Boston is in
negotiations to buy Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette.
Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette closed up 24.98%,
and this news lifted other brokerage stocks.
- Micron
Technology has filed a Federal lawsuit against
Rambus about patent infringement. The Micron

which has sued semiconductor companies like
Hitachi for patent infringement. Rambus
lost 4.02%, while Micron Tech. lost 2.59%.
- Provident
Savings is buying Ridgewood Financial, both
of New Jersey. Ridgewood gained 90%.
- Cyber-Care

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY
REASONS
BEHIND THE PICKS
- We
don't expect Internet companies to suffer
from advertisement revenues for some basic
reasons: The Internet will play a very important
role in the Sydney Olympics. For example,
most people will turn to the Internet to
get scores and standings on sports their
local networks will not cover (mine is Soccer!).
This will be the Internet's really FIRST
Olympics, and we are actually forecasting
a tremendous rise in traffic. Secondly,
as we pointed out in our Quarterly
forecasts, brick and mortar stores are
now raising their online advertisement budgets,
and when is the best time to advertise than
say the Olympics? or after that, the never
ending holidays that stretch from November
to December. As such, we are still bullish
on our picks, especially Internet Portals,
BioPharmaceuticals and Biotechnology. Give
us your point of view on this at our NEW
and EXPANDED message boards here.
