S & P 500: 1492.25  = -14.83

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY

REASONS BEHIND THE PICKS

  • Word is that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) wants the AOL/Time Warner merger proposal to make numerous changes before it will consider approving it. PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY

REASONS BEHIND THE PICKS

  • Today's drop was just a hiccup. An over-reaction due to the Intel and AOL/Time Warner woes. We are still holding to our picks!
  • About Internet advertising, read the next bullet point, and should you want more, visit our Quarterly forecasts, or search our previous articles with the keywords: Nielsen, Media Metrix, and Jupiter Communications.
  • We don't expect Internet companies to suffer from advertisement revenues for some basic reasons: The Internet will play a very important role in the Sydney Olympics. • The US  Unemployment rate edged up from 4.0% to 4.1% in August. Hourly earnings also eased to June levels. The earnings ease came mostly from construction and manufacturing sectors. Job claims rose 105,000 in the period.
  • The National Association of Purchasing Managers (NAPM) reported that its NAPM index dropped to 49.5% in August, the first time the index came below 50% since January 1999. The associate Employment and Production indexes all came in below 50%. The Price Index came at 56.2%, the lowest in a whole year. New Order declined slightly to close at 49.7%. Any close above 50% signify manufacturing growth.
  •  US Construction spending dropped 1.6% in July, the fourth straight month. Public Projects and Retail Building Construction  spending led the decline. Visit our redesigned Federal Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page to read more on our take on the coming Federal Reserve FOMC meeting. Also, visit our expanded message boards to discuss this topic or any other business topic by clicking here.
  • Ford Motor Co. reported that despite the tire recall woes that surrounded its Ford Explorer Series, sales slipped only 3.7% overall in August. Ford Explorer sales dropped 0.8% for the month, but due to the extra selling day in August, Explorer sales actually rose to 40,157 - a new record for August. Ford gained a fraction. GM's overall sales dropped 5.4% for the month, with Oldsmobile sales dropping 30.9%. GM closed up 3 1/8. DainlerChrysler reported that over the year sales rose 2%, led by record sales in SUVs, Minivans, and the PT Cruiser. DaimlerChrysler gained a fraction.

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY

REASONS BEHIND THE PICKS

  • Once again, we have an upbeat outlook for next week. We are still holding to our picks! About Internet advertising, read the next bullet point, and should you want more, visit our Quarterly forecasts, or search our previous articles with the keywords: Nielsen, Media Metrix, and Jupiter Communications.
  • We don't expect Internet companies to suffer from advertisement revenues for some basic reasons: The Internet will play a very important role in the Sydney Olympics. For example, most people will turn to the Internet to get scores and standings on sports their local networks will not cover (mine is Soccer!). This will be the Internet's really FIRST Olympics, and we are actually forecasting a tremendous rise in traffic. Secondly, as we pointed out in our Quarterly forecasts, brick and mortar stores are now raising their online advertisement budgets, and when is the best time to advertise than say the Olympics? or after that, the never ending holidays that stretch from November to December. As such, we are still bullish on our picks, especially Internet Portals, BioPharmaceuticals and Biotechnology. Give us your point of view on this at our NEW and EXPANDED message boards here.
  • STOCKS TO WATCH NEXT MARKET DAY: See below
  • Biotechnology/Biopharmaceuticals, B2B, Technology (Software and Networking stocks), Contract Equipment Manufacturers (CEMs), and Online Brokerage stocks are still our premiere picks.
  • Expect the major Internet Portal sites to perform very well.

  • The US Department of Commerce reported that Internet Retail Sales for Q2 2000 rose 5.3% to $5.518 billion, representing 0.68% of total retail sales. The Q1 2000 Internet Retail Sales data was revised downward to $5.240 billion, representing 0.70% of total retail sales.
  • The Conference Board reported that the US Help Wanted Advertisement Index for July rose moderately to 82 points, the same rate as it was in May, but well lower than the 89 points reported in April. An increasing help wanted index indicates an expansion, but in this case, the growth is negligible.
  • US Factory Orders dropped 7.5% in July (largest drop ever), due mostly to a sharp drop in Aircraft orders. Electronics and Electrical equipment orders dropped 17.2% for the period. Industrial equipment however, rose, with computer equipment leading the gains with a 7.9% increase. Semiconductor supply was also strong for the period.
  • US Chain Store Sales' year-to-year rose a mere 3.3% in August. Chain Store sales continue to slide with Department and Apparel stores leading the decline in August.
  • US Jobless Claims for week ending August 26 stood at 318,000, about 4,000 higher than the preceding week.
  • The Chicago Purchasing Managers Association reported that its Chicago PMI for August dropped to 46.50 which is an indication of manufacturing slowing in the Chicago area. A PMI above 50 is an indication of a expansion in the sector. Based on today's data and what we are expecting tomorrow, we have re-shaped our view on possible Federal Reserve FOMC action on October 3. Visit our redesigned Federal Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page to read more on the Federal Reserve FOMC. Also, visit our expanded message boards to discuss this topic or any other business topic by clicking here.

  • AMD announced that Larry Hollatz, VP of Computation products, and an influence in the spectacular performance of the Athlon Processor, is resigning to pursue other interests. The sudden departure of Mr. Hollatz when AMD is leading rival Intel in 1 Gigahertz processor market is a puzzle. Intel closed up 1.87%, while AMD gained 7.86%.
  • Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) announced that its global Wafer Foundry Capacity is sold out to 2001, and expects demand to be robust up to 2003. TSMC closed up 1.82%.
  • Crude Oil dropped 20 cents to close at $33.12/barrel (October futures delivery).
  • Ariba, IBM, and Microsoft are planning a B2B Standard that will let businesses register their services and other businesses interested in the services can access it (a directory-like standard built around XML). Ariba gained 3.20%, IBM gained 1.39%, while Microsoft lost a fraction.
  • Electronics for Imaging, a color imaging company, is paying $146 million for Splash Technology, a supplier of color servers. Electronics for Imaging lost 3 1/16, while Splash Technology gained 27.88%
  • Nielsen/Net Ratings reported that its July measure of 8 countries' internet use on at home basis found Yahoo! leading with 66 million, AOL with 62 million, and MSN with 50 million. AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! all closed lower.
  • After the CS First Boston acquisition of Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette (DLJ), rumors are now that JP Morgan might be acquired by either Goldman Sachs or Chase Manhattan, or possibly a foreign company. JP Morgan rose 10.08%, Goldman Sachs 3.54%, and Chase up 4.93%.
  • Sanmina, a Contract Electronics Manufacturer (CEM), announced that it is acquiring the Messaging System Integration & Fulfillment Operations of Lucent Technologies. Sanmina gained 13.19%, while Lucent lost 1 1/16. Read our take on the future of CEMs at our Quarterly forecasts page.

PICKS FOR THE NEXT MARKET DAY

REASONS BEHIND THE PICKS

  • The economic data tomorrow and the rest of the week will determine market forces. We expect the economic data to show an increasing slowness in the economy.
  • Internet holding and capacity (storage) companies will do very well (check out our Quarterly forecasts for other picks).

The West recorded the sharpest jump, followed by the South and Midwest regions. The Northeast however, recorded a drop. What does this mean? We shouldn't read too much into this data for the following reasons: Most housing data like existing home sales contradict this data. Secondly, new home sales data for August will be due before the Federal Reserve FOMC meets again on October 3rd., let alone other economic data releases. Emulex ended losing 6.4%, and other data networking stocks like Brocade Communications and QLogic lost 2.95% and 5.30% respectively, due to the hoax.
  • Ford Motor Company, which has been battered recently due to its slow reaction to the 6.5 million Firestone Tire recall that its hot SUVs use, announced today that it is forming an eMarketplace with its 4,200 dealers. The site will be called FordDirect.Com, and will not only sell cars, but give customers information on how much dealers pay for the vehicles. Ford closed down a fraction.
