MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
- US
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew a mere
1.4% in Q4 2000, the weakest growth since
Q2 1995. The slowing growth is attributed
to slowing consumer spending, business investment,
and housing expenditure. The Implicit Price
(Inflation) Deflator rose a modest 2.1%,
but still its highest rise since Q1 1999.
- US
New Home Sales rose a surprising 975,000
units in December, due mostly to cheap fixed
mortgage rates. The Midwest accounted for
the growth.
- Chicago
Purchasing Managers reported that their
PMI Index for January dropped to 40.2% -
any point below 50% is a contraction. All
the indices dropped, except the Prices paid
Index, which rose to 62.9%.
- The
Energy Information Agency (EIA) and the
American Petroleum Institute (API) reported
that for week ending January 26th, US Crude
Oil inventories dropped 3.6 million barrels
and 5.6 million barrels respectively. Reuters
Survey of analysts expected an increase
of 500,000 barrels! The EIA and API reported
that Distillates dropped 1.7 million barrels
and 425,000 barrels respectively. Reuters
survey expected a decrease of 1.3 million
barrels. Visit our Federal
Reserve Monetary Policy Analysis page

S & P 500: 1373.73 = +9.56
MOST
ACTIVE STOCKS & SECTORS
The markets rallied on the first day of
the Federal Reserve FOMC meeting. The Dow was
hot as consumer confidence numbers increase
the chances of larger interest rate cuts. Technology
heavy NASDAQ on the other hand, struggled all
day to barely close in the positive. NASDAQ
trading volume was very heavy at over 2.074
billion shares traded. Gainers included: ADC
Telecommunications, AMD, American Express, Apple,
Applied Materials, Arch Chemicals, Ariba, AT&T,
AT&T Liberty, Bank of America, Cable Design,
Cisco Systems, Coastal Corp, Compaq, Corvis
Corp, eBay, Ericsson, ExxonMobil, GE, General
Cable, Genesco, Gillette Co, Home Depot, IBM,
Informix, Iomega, JDS Uniphase, JP Morgan Chase
& Co, Kmart, Level3 Communications, Lucent
Technologies, Nextel Communications, Nortel
Networks, Openwave Systems, Pfizer, Phillips
Van Heusen, PMC-Sierra, Shopko Stores, Texas
Instruments, Three Five Systems, TiVo, Transocean
Sedco, Trump Hotels, Value City Department Stores,
Vesta Insurance, Xerox Corp, and Yankee Candle.
MAIN
REASONS FOR ACTIVITY
-
The Conference Board reported that the US
Consumer Confidence Index for January 2001
dropped 14.2 points to 114.4, a much larger
drop than economists were expecting, and
the index is now at its lowest point in
4 years. All the indices that make up the
main all declined or moved in a direction
that showed a lack of confidence. Visit
our Federal Reserve
Monetary Policy Analysis page to read
more. Also, visit our expanded message boards

- TiVo
gained 11.11% after reporting fiscal Q4
losses of $2.19 a share, 33 cents a share
less losses than First Call estimated. TiVo
also added 63,000 customers in for fiscal
Q4, and has added 17,000 more since to a
total customer base of 153,000.
- El
Paso Energy Group announced that it is cutting
10%, or 1,650 of its workforce as part of
its restructuring plan since paying $24
billion to acquire Coastal Corp. El Paso
Energy closed lower, while Coastal gained.
- AOL
Time Warner and Yahoo! closed lower despite
good comments from Merrill Lynch analyst
Henry Blodget. Mr. Blodget named AOL Time
Warner, Amazon, eBay, DoubleClick, Openwave
Systems, and Yahoo! as good buys because
they seem to have passed their most tumultuous
times. Only eBay and Openwave that gained
today from the group.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Amazon, which lost 5.90% in regular
trading, is also losing in after hours trading
after reporting fiscal Q4 losses of 25 cents
a share, 1 cent a share less losses than
First Call estimates, and less than half
its Q4 1999 losses. Amazon however, reduced
its sales growth forecast for 2001 to around
20% to 30%, or between $3.3 billion to $3.6
billion from the previous $4 billion. Amazon
also announced that it is cutting its staff
by 1,300 and closing a distribution center
in Georgia, and a Customer support center
in Washington.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Applied Materials, which gained 4.48%
in regular trading, is losing in after hours
