US
Payroll Employment declined 199,000 in September,
twice what economists were expecting. The US Unemployment
Rate was unchanged at 4.9%, while US Hourly earnings
rose 0.2% since July. The Caution here is, these
figures do not include the September 11th. terrorist
attacks, which are going to be reflected in the
October figures.

The
Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI) reported
that, its Future Inflation Gauge index (ECRI FIG)

The
markets staged a late rally after President George
W. Bush proposed at least another $60 billion tax
cut so as to help the economy. The markets have
been hoping for some fiscal action from the Bush
administration so as to help the Feds monetary actions.

Online
media giant Yahoo! lost 3.09% after ABN AMRO cut
its fiscal Q3 revenue estimates due to the weak
advertising climate.
-
Starbucks
and Micromuse gained today after reaffirming their
earnings outlooks yesterday. Micromuse was also
upgraded by Raymond James.
-
Symbol
Technology gained 12.89% after stating that it will
meet its fiscal Q3 earnings estimates.
-
Gateway
gained 3.09% despite warning about its fiscal Q3
financial outlook late yesterday.
-
The

lost 4.44% after warning today that its fiscal Q3
sales will be 22% below estimates due to a bruising
price war with rival Intel. Intel gained 1.90%.

Microsystems gained 6.24% after announcing that
its fiscal Q1 losses will be wider than anticipated
due to the September 11th. US terrorist attacks.
Sun Microsystems announced plans to cut 9% of its
workforce.

Security
shares gained today as the US and allies put military
pressure on Afghanistan. US Intelligence community
is warning that terrorist retaliations against the
US or its businesses worldwide are very possible.

Newport
News Shipbuilding gained 0.51% after announcing
that it will start merger talks with Northrop Grumman
because it has a better offer than General Dynamics'
$2.1 billion bid. Northrop Grumman gained 1.42%,
while General Dynamics gained 1.22%.

Agere
Systems gained 11.09% after announcing that it has
repaid $1 billion of its $2.5 billion debt, and
it expects to have positive earnings by this time
next year.

Metrologic
Instruments gained 60.26% after signing a deal with
the Airport in Guizhou Province China, to supply
it with baggage security scanning tunnel systems.
-
First
Community Financial gained 27.99% after Capital
Bank agreed to acquire it for $54 million.
-
Actuant
Corp. gained 11.76% to close at $24.71/share after
Goldman Sachs upgraded it to "market outperformer"
and raising its price target to $30/share after
reporting fiscal Q4 earnings that beat estimates.

Dell stated that sales have recovered quicker than

in Motion lost 1.84% today due to its earnings report
late yesterday that spooked investors due to inventory
write downs and poor future outlook.

Corning
lost 14.44% today after warning about earnings late
yesterday and announcing massive restructuring that
included idling of some fiber optics plants.

Juniper
Networks gained 10.58% after Morgan Stanley Dean
Witter upgraded it to an "outperform",
while Buckingham Research upgraded it to an "accumulate".

The

Crossing lost 48.80% after issuing an earnings warning
today, and announced plans to merge back with its
Asian subsidiary, Asia Global Crossing, which also

Qlogic
gained 6.80% after Dain Rauscher Wessels upgraded
it to a "strong buy".

Aluminum
giant Alcoa lost 3.96% despite reporting fiscal
Q3 earnings that met First Call estimates. Alcoa
however, expects weakness in the sector to continue
in fiscal Q4.

Marriott
International lost 4.18% after reporting fiscal
Q3 profits that declined from 43 cents a share reported
last year to 39 cents a share. Marriott also cut
its fiscal Q4 outlook due to the impact of the US
terrorist attacks.

Tycom
Ltd. gained 52.54% after parent, Tyco International
offered to acquire the minority stake its spun off
public last year. Tyco International is offering
$784 million. Tyco gained 1.56%.

AFTER
CLOSE: Genentech and Xoma are both losing in after
hours trading after announcing that the launch of
their drug Xanelin™ has been pushed back to Summer
2002.

AFTER
CLOSE: Gateway is losing in after hours trading
after issuing an earnings warning for its fiscal
Q3.
-
AFTER
CLOSE: Espeed, the privately held bond trading and
clearing company owned by investment house Cantor
Fitzgerald, announced that it will resume trading
tomorrow. Espeed and Cantor Fitzgerald occupied
the top levels of the World Trade Center and saw
almost all of its staff wiped out by the September
11th. terrorist attacks.

CLOSE: BMC Software is losing in after hours trading
after warning about fiscal Q2 earnings.

AFTER
CLOSE: XL Capital warned that its losses will be
higher than expected, and it will be taking a $100
million charge.

CLOSE: Micromuse is still gaining in after hours
trading announcing that it will meet Wall Street's
fiscal Q4 estimates.

AFTER
CLOSE: Starbucks is gaining after announcing that
it will meet fiscal 2001 financial targets. Starbucks
announced that it opened 1,208 stores in fiscal
2001, and plans to open 1,200 in fiscal 2002.

Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reported that
its MBA Mortgage Applications Survey for week ending
September 28th. rose 20.5% to 771.1. The Purchase
Index rose 8.9% to 308.8, and the Refinance Index
rose 27.5% to 3459.8.
-
The
Energy Information Agency (EIA) and the American
Petroleum Institute (API) reported that for week
ending September 28th, US Crude Oil inventories
rose 1.6 million barrels and 3.42 million barrels
respectively, while Distillates rose 1 million barrels
and 56,000 barrels respectively.
-
The
National Association of Purchasing managers (NAPM)
reported that, its NAPM Non-manufacturing Index
rose 4.7% in September to 50.2% - any point above
50% means an expansion. All the indices gained -
the Export and Import indices rose above the 50%
mark.
-
US
Vehicle Sales declined by 600,000 units in September
- both Autos and Light Trucks declined. GM saw an
increase in sales; Nissan held steady for the 3rd.
straight month, while the rest saw declines.

The
Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI), a good
measure of the economy's recession risks, worsened
to -1.37 in August, after posting a modest -0.25
in July. the 3 month moving average declined to
-1.05%, all sure signs that the recession risks

Cisco
Systems gained 21.52% after its CEO John Chambers
stated that he is very comfortable with analysts'
fiscal Q1 estimates. Cisco helped the tech sector
to close higher.

Most
Internet shares rallied today.

Eli
Lilly lost 4.37% after issuing an earnings warning
today. Eli Lilly blamed the unexpected drop in sales
for its anti-depressant, Prozac™, which lost its
patent protection in August.

Compaq
gained 6% after Hewlett Packard reiterated its intention
to acquire it, despite the major changes that have
happened in the markets and the economy lately.
Hewlett Packard gained 4.92%.

Nortel
Networks, which issued an earnings warning late
yesterday, gained 4.73% today after announcing that
it is selling its Customer Relationship Management
(CRM) operations to Amdocs Ltd. for $200 million

estimates. Corning also announced that it will expand
its restructuring by increasing job cuts, idle some
fiber optics plants, and take a $1 billion charge
in fiscal 2001.

CLOSE: Research in Motion is losing in after hours
trading despite reporting fiscal Q2 earnings that
beat First Call estimates by 1 cent a share and
revenues almost doubled to $80.1 million. Research
in Motion also announced that it is writing down
$23 million in investment and inventory, and buying
back 5 million of its shares in the next 12 months.
Research in Motion stated that its Blackberry™ wireless
email technology now has 246,000 subscribers and
12,000 corporate users.

has been chosen to supply a major part of the seats
for Boeing's Business Jets. BE Aerospace also announced
that it has began the delivery of seats to Germany's
Lufthansa Technik.

Internet
infrastructure company Inktomi gained 22.59% after
announcing today that its fiscal Q4 revenue will
be in line, and losses will be lower than anticipated.

AFTER
CLOSE: Nortel Networks is still losing in after
hours trading after announcing that it expects fiscal
Q3 losses to be $3.6 billion, which is below the
$19.4 billion losses posted in fiscal Q2. Nortel
also expects revenue to drop from fiscal Q2 revenues
of $4.6 billion to $3.5 billion. Nortel's CFO Frank
Dunn is to takeover as President and CEO effective
November 1st, while current CEO John A. Roth will
remain as Vice Chairman until the end of 2002. Nortel
also announced another round of job cuts.

CLOSE: Priceline.Com is still gaining in after hours
trading after stating that it expects fiscal Q3
revenue to be at the higher end of its $280 million
to $300 million mark, as its business seem to be
recovering quickly from the September 11th. terrorist
attacks.

AFTER
CLOSE: Cosine Communications is gaining in after
hours after announcing that it will meet its fiscal
Q3 earnings, but fiscal Q4 is too early to tell.
Cosine also announced it is cutting 14% of its workforce,
and taking a $7 million restructuring charge. Cosine
says it had $190 million in cash and short term
instruments as of September 30th.

reported that, its NAPM Index for September declined

Construction Spending in August declined 1.1% to

monthly decline since December 2000. Asia Pacific
(excluding Japan) saw an improvement, while the
