  • Dell gained 2.08% after signing a deal with EMC to market EMC's Clarion Enterprise storage systems to its clients. The deal is valued in the billions and it lasts for 5 years. EMC gained 5.91% on the news.

  • Copiers and printing technology company Lexmark International lost 11.08% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that met, but warned about fiscal Q4.

  • 3M gained 5.11% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat Wall Street estimates by 1 cent a share, despite a 21% decline in earnings.

  • Hasbro gained 5.12% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat First Call estimates by 5 cents a share.

  • SBC Communications lost 5.13% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that missed Wall Street estimates by 1 cent a share. SBC announced that it will be cutting jobs and next year's capital spending by 20%.

  • Energy trading giant Enron lost 20.73% today after the SEC requested information about a transaction the Wall Street Journal reported about. The SEC is requesting information on how a consulting company owned by Enron's CFO is receiving millions of Dollars as consulting fees to Enron. Enron has lost more than 46% of its value in the last 6 trading days.

  • American Express gained 3.41% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat Wall Street estimates, despite a 60% decline in operating profits.

  • Online video conference company Webex gained 4.37% after striking deals to offer its services to France Telecom and Bea Systems. Bea Systems gained 3.07%.

  • Ford Motor Company gained 0.24% after pulling off a $9.4 billion bond sale today, a whopping $6.4 billion more than was planned. Some of the bond yields were as high as 8.02%, thus attracting bond buyers from various specialties.

  • DevX Energy gained 30% to close at $6.76 a share after Comstock Resources agreed to acquire it for $7.32 a share. Comstock Resources gained 2%.

  • Upscale juice company Odwalla gained 47.79% on news that Coca Cola is in talks to acquire it.

  • Sungard Data Systems lost 4.40% after the US Department of Justice sued to block its $825 million acquisition of Comdisco's disaster recovery business. With Sungard Data Systems facing a possible blockade, Hewlett Packard seems the likely candidate to acquire the unit (for now). Comdisco lost 11.43%, while Hewlett Packard gained.

  • US Steel shares gained after the International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled that foreign steel imports have affected the US steel industry seriously. The ITC has up till December 19th. to prescribe remedies, which will likely be in the form of Tariffs, and/or import Quotas.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Epiphany is losing in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 losses that were 2 cents a share less than First Call estimates, but double last year's. Revenue declined from $39.1 million last year to $28.5 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Vitessee Semiconductor is still gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q4 losses that were 1 cent a share wider than Wall Street expected, and revenue missed by $1.5 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Expedia is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q1 earnings that beat First Call estimates by a whopping 10 cents a share. Revenue rose from $42.1 million reported last year to a whopping $79.5 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Silicon Graphics is still gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q1 losses that were 3 cents a share wider than First Call estimates, and revenue that missed too.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Altera is losing in after hours trading despite reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that met estimates, but revenue was $200,000 shy of Wall Street estimates.

  • AFTER CLOSE: JDA Software is gaining in after hours market after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat First Call estimates by 3 cents a share on revenue that rose 15% over the year to $50 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: FreeMarkets is still gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 losses that were more than half less than First Call estimates, while over the year revenue rose 53% to $40.6 million. Freemarkets expects to post a profit in fiscal Q4.

  • Automated utility meter reading systems company Itron gained 17.65% on a JP Morgan Chase & Co. upgrade to "buy". JP Morgan Chase also raised its price target on the stock.

  • QLT gained after the Medicare and Medicaid insurance agencies announced that they will expand their coverage to include QLT's anti-blindness drug, Visudyne™.

  • Scientific Atlanta gained 22.09% after Merrill Lynch upgraded it to a "buy", and ABN AMRO upgraded it to a "hold". Analysts are expecting a strong demand and earnings from its digital set top boxes.

  • Guidant gained 8.20% on an AG Edwards upgrade.

  • Sungard Data Systems gained 3.56% on a Robertson Stephens upgrade to "buy". Robertson Stephens also made known that based on the company's earnings report late yesterday, the shares are undervalued.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Peoplesoft is still gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat Wall Street estimates by 3 cents a share. Revenue rose to $509.4 million, which missed estimates, but came in higher than the year before.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Nortel Networks is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 losses that were 1 cent a share less than First Call estimates, as sales declined almost by half to $3.69 billion.

  • The Energy Information Agency (EIA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) reported that for week ending October 12th, US Crude Oil inventories declined 4.4 million barrels and 7.02 million barrels respectively, while Distillates gained 2 million barrels and 2.77 million barrels respectively.

  • US New Residential Housing Starts rose 1.7% in September to 1.57 million units. Building Permits and New Private Home Completions declined for the period. The South and Western US accounted for the increase.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Symantec is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat Wall Street estimates by a whopping 13 cents a share. Revenue rose from $226.4 million to $242.4 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Immunex is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings of 7 cents a share, in line with First Call estimates, and 26% higher than the year before. Revenue rose from $219 million last year to $253 million.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Sprint PCS Group is still gaining in after hours trading despite reporting fiscal Q3 losses that were wider. On the upside, Sprint PCS reported that it added 1.2 million new customers in the period, and expects to add another 1.3 million in fiscal Q4.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Sprint FON Group is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that met estimates, while revenue declined 4.5% to $4.24 billion. Sprint FON announced that it is terminating its ION initiative, which should cost about 6,000 jobs. Sprint FON is taking a $2 billion charge in fiscal Q4 due to the termination of ION.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Apple Computer is gaining in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q4 earnings that beat First Call estimates by 3 cents a share. Over the year revenue declined 22% to $1.45 billion, which missed estimates.

  • AFTER CLOSE: Handspring is still losing in after hours trading after reporting fiscal Q1 losses that were 4 cents a share less than First Call estimates. Handsprings sales was $61.4 million, which was below the estimate of $67 million.

  • Kimberly Clark lost 7.40% on a Salomon Smith Barney downgrade to "outperform", after the company issued an earnings warning late yesterday.

  • Global Crossing and Tycom gained 19.30% and 0.20% respectively after they agreed to settle disputes over their Atlantic and South America crossing cable systems.

  • Charles Schwab gained 10% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that beat Wall Street estimates by 1 cent a share, despite a 24.5% decline in revenue to $997 million.

  • Caterpillar lost 0.35% after reporting fiscal Q3 earnings that missed, and then warned about fiscal Q4 estimates. Caterpillar is expecting fiscal 2002 to be either flat or slightly higher.

  • Metromedia Fiber gained 22.58% after announcing a contract to supply Electronics Communications Network (ECN) Archipelago™ with high-bandwidth metro areas optical Internet services.

  • Microstrategy gained 39.18% today after reiterating its 2002 profitability target.
